This Texas district had four students die from fentanyl overdoses in a single summer. A look at their fight to keep students alive.

Since summer 2022, Hays CISD has seen six deaths of high school students from fentanyl overdoses and poisonings.

Starting next school year, middle and high schools across Texas will be required to teach students about the dangers of fentanyl.

It’s been about two weeks since many school districts let out for summer break, and the Kyle Police Department said they’ve already seen one teen-related fentanyl overdose.

It isn’t car crashes, it isn’t guns, and it isn’t suicide: Fentanyl poisoning is now the leading cause of death among Americans ages 18 to 45. It’s a statistic Janel Rodriguez has surely cited more times than she can count.
